Malika Leiper and Stephen Burks, partners at Stephen Burks Man Made, undertook a two-and-a-half-month residency in Yoshino, Nara, beginning in the summer of 2025.
Having previously served as co-curators of the United States Pavilion at the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale, they now present a new body of sculptural work developed in Yoshino. The exhibition brings together cedar and cypress, materials deeply associated with the sacred landscape of the region, with the ritual geometry of Kuba art. Through this encounter, the works move between material presence and abstraction, opening a dialogue between Japanese craft traditions, African visual systems, and contemporary sculptural practice.
