The Black Art in Japan Artist Directory is an evolving research resource dedicated to Black and mixed-race artists whose work has been exhibited, produced or presented in Japan, as well as to practices exploring the artistic and cultural relationships connecting Japan, Africa and Black diasporas.
The directory is based on documented exhibitions, collaborations and ongoing research. Bringing together artistic trajectories, exhibition histories and institutional contexts, it documents a field that has often remained dispersed across archives, publications and temporary events.
Designed for art enthusiasts, students, educators, researchers, curators, writers and collectors, the directory offers a starting point for discovering artists, developing research and tracing the many forms through which Black artistic practices have entered into dialogue with Japan.
The directory is regularly reviewed and expanded as new sources become available.
